Brother’s Keeper

Exhibition Event

The Barbershop, for centuries, has served as a safe space for Black men to connect and align.

Case Study:

Objective

Make a safe space for Black men to tap into their own mental health in a world where their emotional and mental wellness has been depriortized as a result of hypermasculinity and structural racism.

Approach

Create an immersive experience in collaboration with visual artists to tell the story of the barbershop and the role it plays within Black communities.

Outcome

A 3-day exhibition with over 400 RSVPs, but more importantly, a story told in so many ways.

  • A partnership with Brooklyn Gin and a custom-made cocktail menu by Jahde Marley

  • Featured art by some of our time’s most talented: Jeffrey Henson Scales, Anthony Jamari Thomas, Andre Uncut, Antoinette Thomas

  • Live DJ sets by Frei Speech, SilkyBlack, and a custom mix by Clever Best, telling the story of the barbershop through music

  • Live installation by barber and hair stylist Gaia Earthpeace cutting hair on site

  • Mini Documentary on the barbershop by Seven Crowns

  • Sponsorship by Essentia Water

“A sense of community can emanate from many sources, however, that unique spirit of connectedness, mutual support and self care found within Black barbershops is especially vibrant and rightfully cherished. Brooklyn Gin is proud to support Coyote Agency and the Brother’s Keeper exhibition in Brooklyn to celebrate such an important symbol, its traditions and its place in the community.”
